This book is a poorly researched emotional blackmail July 19, 2010 Concerned 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Unfortunately, books do not have to be peer reviewed. The statements in this book do not hold true to fact. There are many instances in this book in which the pet owner with minimal knowledge of the pet food industry can be led astray by some well formulated yet poorly supported semi-fact. For example I would draw your attention to the part discussing meat by-products. It is indeed true that meat by-products are used in pet foods, as they are in human food (what do you think are in sausages). However, these by-products have to be fit for human consumption by law. Any carcass on the dressing line is checked by multiple qualified meat inspectors who are not aware of whether that carcass is for animal or human consumption. Therefore the carcass IS checked for true safety of human consumption. Identification of liver fluke or pneumonia, for example, does not indicate it should be used for pet food. Quite the contrary as in fact any sign of systemic disease such as severe pneumonia brings into question the safety of the entire carcass and this carcass will be completely consigned for disposal.
This is just one example of the many errors in this book and it is of grave concern for me that it is endorsed by a veterinary surgeon. Holistic therapy for animals should be used with the same scientific basis as all medicines and should be proven or disproven and then peer reviewed for accuracy. Holistic therapy is not a license to make things up for profit!
WHAT A GREAT READ October 6, 2009 Miss Marples (East Sussex, UK) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Brilliant book, and tells the horrors of feeding dry/canned feeds to your dog. Tells it as it is,and a great book if you want to know more about what you should or shouldnt feed your pets. It certainly brought home some shocking facts about commercial pet foods. A great book to add to your collection if you have an interest in dogs in general. Its very informative, and spoken in laymans terms, and one of those books you can refer back to time after time.

A freind recommended this book to me as a must read and I am so glad I did. I was a little shocked to say the least, although most of the data is taken studies carried out in the USA I have no doubt the it also applies to pet food manufacturing in the UK. It gives the reader the low down on labelling laws in the UK and how they have been used to mislead us as well as details on why we see the word derivative so frequently on the list of ingredients. If you really want to know what you are feeding mans best freind this is the book to read.
Who is pet food for? January 2, 2007 Elizabeth Hennel (Rochdale, UK) 8 out of 9 found this review helpful
I t amazes me that so much of our supermarkets are given over to junk food - not ust for us but for our pets too. We have for years swallowed (literally) the idea that convenience is what we need/want. And now look at us - morbidly obese and chronically unhealthy - the rise in a variety of chronic diseases, including diabetes and heart disease, has clearly followedthe rise in popularity of junk food. And our pets are going the same way. We are desperate to show we care for our animals and most of us do that by buying what we think is the right food - WRONG. Commercial petfood is just that - commercial - it makes huge profits for the companies that produce it. But it bears no relation to what our aniamls actually need or would choose if they could. And it has to be said that the veterinary profession have colluded with the petfood companies by actively advising against more natural feeding.
I find it just as "convenient" to go to the butcher and order in bulk for my dogs as it is to go to the supermarket. Giving my dogs bones and fresh food is the best way for them to be able to express their essential dog-ness, and keeps them mentally as well as physically healthy.
To some extent this book was preaching to the converted - in over 40 years fo keeping dogs and cats I have NEVER used commerical petfood - I have never understood why I should buy this strange-looking,smelly stuff.. Having read this book I see no reason to change.
