Plastic Beach September 6, 2010 Sam Hmm I think this is a pretty disapointing album.
The songs aren't really meaningful, and not the best sounding in the world either. I think the only song that I really like is "Melancholy Hill"
Honestly, when are people going to take a stand against this type of 'music'? August 25, 2010 Mr. S. Bennett (london) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I'm not going to critique every track here, and i've never been a fan of Gorillaz - this album perfectly illustrates why.
This is a half-baked mish-mash-wish-wash of sterile studio nonsense laced with formulaic hip-hop-flop-pop. Even Albarn sounds so non-plussed with his own vocals - goddamn it! we need bands, with proper instruments, real opinions, why not some passion? It's so devoid of emotion it should be given to insomniacs the world over. Whereas 90s music had the attitude to shout 'lager, lager, lager', this just whispers 'coma, coma, coma'. Everyone on this album needs to take a long, hard look in the mirror, and decide if they want to make music or muse-tat. This is undoubtedly the latter. Enough of this ploddy, flatlining pap, please. Even the people in Gorillaz don't want to show their real faces - says it all.
If you want authentic electronic music (british) then check out 'Audio Bullys - Higher Than The Eiffel'.
Plastic Beach August 25, 2010 DailyCrumb Listening to Plastic Beach is a journey. Since I bought it my tastes in music have expanded to the far edges of sound. It made me want to explore different sounds.
The album is very good, with some great stuff. I'm the biggest Damon Albarn fan in the WORLD, apart from his mum. I love everything he's worked on and every musical experiment hes done.
Short Track by Track
1. Beautiful, gets any listener in the mood for more. I listened to the album on my computer, then on my stereo, listening to every song trying to hear every instrument.
2. Its ok. Nice tune, once again another to get you in the mood. But could have used the brass and snoop for maybe a more exciting song.
3. Did not like it the first time i heard it, i thought it bad putting the rappers all over the lovely music. I've changed my mind and the song seems quite refreshing now
4. A classic? The more i listen to it the more i like it. But i actually prefer the instrumental version. And prefered 'thats electric!' in 'Electric Shock' but still a great tune and great live.
5. Stylo!! Its so weird. Such a simple.. repetitive sound. Yet it may be my fave song on the album. I listened to it at the very beginning and have not stopped since. Its no Clint Eastwood but its good. Damons vocals work really well.
6. First time i heard it, loved it. Its a good song, though not everyones tastes, too happy.
7. Another fave song. Nice beginning then extremely epic upbeat second half with Little Dragon.
8. Glitter Freeze.. no thanks. my least fave song. its not nice, its too messy. i liked it when i first heard it but.. messy
9. would have been better without lou (shoot me :D )
10. Beautiful! Not quite El Manana but still a lovely tune i love to hear as much as Stylo
11. great! Remember hearing it on radio first time. Its a good classic gloomy Gorillaz tune
12. Interesting! Sounds more exciting live with the powerful brass but otherwise that its ok. Its a keeper
13. Great song, not a classic but its great to listen to and one people may forget about.
14. Another fave of my own. To Binge was the first song i went OMG about when i heard the previews. Its a great song, repetitive but beautiful with the two vocalists and beachy tune. Hope it becomes a single
15. A beautiful foggy song (I get the impression of bobby sitting in the fog.) But could have used some more powerful tunes to keep it from becoming bobby all alone. Though it may have been the fact Bobby sings differently to Damon's version.
16. Brilliant! Memorable, fun, silly, and a perfect end to the album. Great song
Concept albums are back (?) July 31, 2010 Bob from Ossie (People's Republic of Oswaldtwistle) Just when you thought they had been relegated to history the concept album makes a reappearance. It's OK - not a masterpiece, but then a genre that takes some getting used to.
Wonderful, Must Buy Album July 18, 2010 A. Pilkington (Devon, England) Plastic Beach is my favourite Gorillaz album to date. Like some other reviewers, I had to listen to it a few times to really get to love it, but some of the songs are truly beautiful, both musically and vocally. Some of Damon Albarn's vocals are really great, as are ones from Little Dragon singer Yukimi Nagano, who has a beautiful voice.
As with previous Gorillaz albums, I did not find all tracks to my liking, but this collection contains some truly great music. My favourites include Stylo, Empire Ants, On Melancholy Hill, Broken and To Binge.
For me, Gorillaz get better with the release of each album, Gorillaz being my least favourite, Demon Days is good, but Plastic Beach is great, and is amongst my favourite albums of all time.
